Curiosity about values of treasures in our homes is becoming more popular. As our society ages we are finding more items – including quilts – that we have no idea what value they have.

There are many financial issues that require appraisals to protect your interests.

  • Our insurance companies stress that everyone should have a comprehensive inventory of personal property, collections and household goods for their personal property coverage. Also an appraisal is needed for claims or losses.
  • Lawyers need appraisals to settle estates, and in the case of divorce settlements – inventories are required for the division of property.
  • Banks and trust companies require appraisals of personal property before they distribute or sell the items.
  • Moving/shipping companies need appraisals to assess the loss or damage for a proper settlement.
  • Donations to your favourite charity require appraisals.

A quilt appraisal is your written document confirming the age, identification, construction, workmanship and up-to-date unbiased estimate of value of your quilt, art quilt or quilted garment.

We are inviting the general public to bring in their quilts — old and new, heavy quilts, simple quilts, poorly cared for quits, rough fabrics, painted quilts, embroidered quilts and otherwise unappreciated quilts. Quilts quilted by local groups, First World War, Second World War and depression era quilts are all welcome. On May 14–15, 2011 Judy Lyons, Quilt Appraiser from Burlington, Ontario will be at the Quilts in the Gardens to appraise quilts and have quilt consultations. As an alternative to using the form on this page, you can call Judy at 905-639-2441 or email her for an appointment. Appointments for appraisals can be made any time if you cannot make it to the show.

Guild Members: please note that quilts hanging in the show can be appraised while they are hanging.
