ABSTRACT – REPRESENTATIONAL

1st Place
Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day

Carol Goddu

This original 78" x 55" design is inspired by Roman wall paintings.

Machine piecing, hand appliqué, machine appliqué, machine quilting and embroidery: Carol Goddu.

2nd Place
From an Antique Land

Dwayne Wanner

The 60" x 60" design is based on a technique of the Japanese quilter Yoshiko Jinzenji. Blocks are constructed from machine-sewn piping attached to a muslin base in a “log cabin” arrangement. Fabrics are cotton and silk and center piece of each square is Japanese Kasuri fabric. Border is made of upholstery material. The colours and structure remind of door panels of mosques and residences in the Middle east.

Machine piecing, machine and hand quilting: Dwayne Wanner.

3rd Place
Rock Garden – A 60° Wonder

Kay Hannah

Appearing to be a “One Block Wonder” in the style of Maxine Rosenthal, this 69" x 80" quilt also owes credit to Sara Nephew, Bethany S. Reynolds, Diane Jansen and author’s geometry teachers. Author was unable to find the perfect rock fabric for the job and had to create her own cubes to represent moss-covered blocks of stone. Border represents a trellis as an entrance to the garden, and the batik represents a gravel walkway.

Machine piecing and binding: Kay Hannah. Long arm machine quilting: Shelley DeHay-Turner.

1st Place
Black & White & Red All Over

The jacket is an adaptation of Blazer Bonanza, Revere Front, by MacPhee Patterns. It is a combination of a wide variety of fabrics which are meant to fray because they have been appliqued in a raw edge fashion.

Quilting, cutting fabrics, piecing and embroidery: Lynne McCulloch.

The jacket was inspired from a Vogue Pattern V2951 designed by Koos Van Den Akker.

3rd Place
In Memory of Nellie

Lynne McCulloch

The jacket reminds of a dear friend who passed away a year and a half ago. Her favourite colour was red and she looked like a queen wearing that colour. The jacket pattern is an adaptation of Trilogy 3 in 1 by Akasha. It is constructed of silks and cottons.

Quilting, piecing, fitting, organizing and scaling the embroideries: Lynne McCulloch.
